Shichinarikago

Niigata prefecture’s Sadogashima is the home of locally grown bamboo shichi-nari-kago. The name literally means 7 (shichi) use (nari) baskets (kago) – indicating that it can be used in many more than 7 ways! In farm work, it carries harvested grains, and in fishing, it carries seaweed, clams, and fish. To use it as a hip basket, simply thread a line through the seams at the edges. Made with sophisticated handwork, the baskets serve as a simple daily tool.
